The DVD Review

THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT
Released by AV Channel

First broadcast in 1975, the Naked Civil Servant, one of the top plays of the 1970's. tells the true story of flamboyant homosexual Quentin Crisp from the early 1930's to the then present day.
Winning numerous awards, including a BAFTA for John Hurt as best actor The Naked Civil Servant is a very funny piece of work with a great script by Philip Mackie, the 30's and 40's are extremely well captured, remember these were times when to be homosexual was a huge no-no.
John Hurt, who also provides a voice over narration for the film, captures Crisp to a tee and there are some fine supporting performances from well known faces including Roger Lloyd Pack as a gay friend of Quentin's as well as Patricia Hodge and a very young Phil Daniels.

EXTRAS: include a text commentary on the context of the film. There is a also a great interview with the real Quentin by Mavis Nicholson, taken from the show Mavis Catches Up With, originally broadcast in 1989 (this also includes some vintage 1975 interview material). Finally there is a good extract from Quentin's autobiography.
