This
marvellously hued period drama
set in
Africa
during World War II is
guaranteed to have you a weeping
with its portrayal of a Jewish
family (the Reidlich’s)
seeking refuge from the growing
Nazi menace by moving to a
Kenyan farm in 1938. The father
Walter (Merals Ninidze), a
former successful lawyer, is
forced to take a job as a
caretaker at the farm, wife
Jettel (Julian Kohler) though is
indifferent to her new life, not
willing to come to terms with
the major changes the family has
undergone; It’s their daughter
Regina though who is most quick
at adapting to their new way of
life.
A
stunning movie Nowhere in
Africa
, although set during the second
world war is not a movie about
the war as such but one of
change, WWII providing only the
backdrop on which the story
hangs. Writer director Caroline
Link uses the camera with an
experts eye, mixing in scenes of
the harsh German winter and the
beautiful Kenyan countryside.
Winner
of the Oscar for best foreign
film of 2003 Nowhere in
Africa
is pretty much a must see movie.
Emotional, stirring and
lingering long in the memory
after the watching.
