The basic premise sees the conniving market trader Delboy
(an immaculate David Jason) bringing up his younger brother Rodney
(Nicholas Lyndhurst – all lanky naivity) and looking after their
ageing granddad (Lennard Pearce is a major major highlight of these
early series, absolutely gorgeous in his daftness), what makes the
series so good (apart from the fantastic scripts and top quality acting
of course) is that sense of all the characters being trapped in some way
(in much the same way as another of this months Roadshow releases Mother
and Son).
The plots (which here include one of the all time classic
Only Fools episodes the Chandelier smash of A Touch of Glass, the
Spanish holiday shenanigans of It Never Rains and the Pokertastic A
Losing Streak) generally run second place to the banter between the main
cast and their coterie of supporting players – the stupid Trigger, the
slimy Boycie, seedy café owner Sid.
