PETER PAN

Wow, what a thrilling ride Peter Pan is, newly released from Universal. Taking J.M. Barrie’s classic Victorian story and turning it into a real visual feast for the modern palette whilst remaining true to Barrie ’s vision is no mean feat, but writer/director P.J. Hogan has pulled it off a treat.

The charismatic Jeremy Sumpter is a real find as Peter Pan with just the right balance of brashness and naivety, the plot sees Peter whisk the Darling children off to Neverland after becoming enamoured of oldest Darling child Wendy, before too long the decidedly evil Captain Hook (Jason Isaacs who also plays the role of Mr Darling, father to the Darling children) has kidnapped Wendy’s two brothers and it is up to Peter and his band of Lost Boys to get them back.

All of the young cast are very good especially Peter and Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood) as is Isaacs in the role of Hook (with just the right degree of smoothness to be a class A villain), there are also some great English character actors in the supporting cast too including Richard Briers as an elderly member of Hook’s pirate gang and Geoffrey Palmer as Mr Darling’s boss, Lynn Redgrave also pops up as a Darling grandmother; Kudos too to Ludivine Sagnier’s Tinker Bell who has to carry a whole range of emotions without speaking an understandable word of English.

Full of great looking special effects and moments of true adventure and moments of heartache it’s easy to see why Peter Pan cleaned up at the box office (some $8 million in Australia alone) because in an age when the family movie is hard to find Peter Pan has plenty to offer both young and old alike.

EXTRAS include an alternative ending and five featurettes looking at various aspects of the movie such as Through the Eyes of Captain Hook (Jason Isaacs own look at making Peter Pan) and Lost Boys on the Set ( a look at the ragamuffins playing the Lost Boys) and there is also a feature hosted by Sarah Ferguson called The Legacy of Pan.
