The DVD Review

RHAPSODY IN BLACK

Released by AV Channel. Out now to buy.

Now this is a very classy release bringing us as it does a collection of performances by jazz greats from vintage rarely seen Canadian TV shows.

Molly Johnson, a noted Canadian jazz singer, guides us through footage of 10 classic jazz names including the likes of Duke Ellington (who performs Sophisticated Lady), Cab Colloway and his theme song Minnie the Moocher, Ella Fitzgerald (definitely the stand out of the acts on show) performing three numbers, Billy Eckstine performing September Song, Sarah Vaughan with Misty as well as Sammy Davis Jr sashaying his way through a couple of numbers.

At the time one of the few outlets open to black performers were appearances on more laid back Canadian TV and for such old footage the quality is first rate as are the performances, definitely a release to be enjoyed and one that would work equally well as an audio cd.

No extras unfortunately.
