Very
idiosyncratic, subversive even,
Hollywood movie with a dark
heart and a high profile cast
including the likes of Glenn
Close and Dermot Mulroney, the
Safety of Objects offers up a
tale of how disconnected the
modern world is, the Earth is
smaller than ever yet people are
more afraid of communication and
intimacy.
The
movie follows the lives of four
neighbouring dysfunctional
families all living in a well to
do suburb with much of the
action taking place over four
days as each of the characters
attempt to overcome their dependence
on “The Safety of Objects”.
There is the Gold family headed
by Glenn Close as Esther,
struggling to cope with looking
after a son in a coma and
avoiding spending time with the
rest of the family; the Trains
where lawyer Jim (Dermot
Mulroney) would rather be
involved with his work than his
wife Susan (Moira Kelly)
and with a son who has developed
an uncomfortable fixation on
his sister’s Barbie dolls; The
Jennings single mum Jeanette
(Patricia Clarkson) struggling
with her two kids Sam and
Rayanne and then there are the
Christianson household with wife
Helen (Mary Kay Place) seriously
bored with her husband.
The
movie very cleverly takes some
of the staples of soap opera and
subverts them into a treatise on
our post modern anything goes
world. An entertaining wordy
movie that leaves you thinking.
