TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN
Distributor: MRA Entertainment
Certificate: PG | 82 minutes
Director:
Woody Allen
Cast:
Woody Allen, Janet Margolin
Extras:
Yes

Take the money and run was the first intimation to the world at large that Woody Allen’s film career was going to be something special, he had of course been working in stand up through much of the sixties and had made a couple of movies but here Allen had complete control, writing, directing and starring in a high profile movie.

Taking a film documentary type feel Allen plays Virgil Starkwell who despite being highly intelligent embarks on a gumball machine robbing spree, wanted by the police under five different aliases.

When Virgil falls in love with Louise (Janet Margolin)he decides to pull off one big bank robbery to furnish their life together – however things don’t go exactly according to plan.

Full of great visual jokes Take The Money and Run is very funny, a clear forerunner of the surreal delights of Bananas and Sleeper. The movie can be seen as Allen setting out his stall as a film-maker, it’s also pretty hilarious.
