THE
TICK
Released
by Columbia Pictures in a 2 disc
set.
Superhero
sitcom.
Let’s
face it there have not been too
many sitcoms with a superhero in
the lead role; The Tick though
is just such a beast, based on
the comic book by Ben Edlund the
show had first had a run out in
1994 with an animated version
which missed out on an audience,
followed a few years later by
this short run series (9
episodes and only 8 made it on
air). Patrick Warburton stars as
The Tick, a blue clad superhero
who spends most of his time
trying to come up with new
winning catchphrases, his
aide-de-camp (camp being the
operative word) is his flatmate
Arthur (David Burke), their
dialogue positively crackles
with double entendres, also
heavily involved are fellow
superheroes, the sexy Captain
Liberty (Liz Vassey) and
Batmanuel (Nestor Carbonell).
Admittedly
low in budget the gang spend
most of their time in bars
talking about their adventures
rather than going on them, the
Tick is actually a riot of a
sitcom, subversive, camp and
very funny. Director Barry (Men
in Black) Sonnenfeld actually
directed the first episode (of
which he is very proud - a fact
he reveals in the commentary for
this episode) and there is also
a commentary from creator Ben
Edlund, the other extras include
some trailers (is that an extra?
Surely not) and various weblinks.
The Tick certainly deserves to
be more widely known than it is,
maybe this DVD release can help
spread the gospel.
