VIVA ZAPATA
Distributor: Fox Home Entertainment
Certificate: PG | 113 minutes | Black and White
Director:Elia Kazan
Cast:
Marlon Brando, Jean Peters, Anthony Quinn, Frank Silvera
Extras:
No

Made in 1952 and with a script by the legendary John Steinbeck Viva Zapata was very much a star vehicle for Marlon Brando (who was hot to trot after On The Waterfront) and director Elia Kazan (who was the hottest director in Hollywood at the time having also directed Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire).

Brando plays Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata who in 1911 leads a revolution but is eventually betrayed by one of his co-horts.

Anthony Quinn pretty much steals the movie from under Brando’s nose, playing his brother. Quinn walked off with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at that years academy awards.

Obviously with a script from Steinbeck (his only credited screenplay although he had spend time working as an uncredited rewrite man during much of the forties) the dialogue is first rate and some of the action sequences spectacular. Brando as usual manages to inhabit the character he plays but still remains Brando and despite some dodgy fake tanning application manages to make you believe in Zapata.

No extras just the original trailer.
