THE WANNABES
Distributor: Columbia Entertainment
Co-written & Directed by Nick Gianoppolous
Cast:
Nick Gianopulous, Russell Dykstra, Isla Fisher, Felix Williamson, Michael Carmen
Extras: Yes

I burned my legwarmers for you

30 something Danny (Nick Gianoppolous) is not one of life’s successes, still hurt following his failed appearance at the age of 8 on a TV talent show, he is working in his mother’s dance studio teaching old age pensioners in a modern dance class, however when he is tricked by a gang of well dodgy crooks into putting together a children’s entertainment group (which gets christened The Wannabes) in order to pull off a heist at a Melbourne mansion, things take a turn for the bizarre when the Wannabes actually become popular with kids and adults alike.

Full of innuendo, single entrendes and copious amounts of swearing, The Wannabes is certainly not a family film (although one of the extras is a tricky one where you can play the film without the swearing included), it’s pretty funny though. Giannopolous is pretty wimpy in the lead role but the supporting cast is excellent from Russell Dykstra’s gang leader, Marcus to Ryan Johnston’s visual muscle bound rapper Hammer, even Isla Fisher is watchable as Kirsty (the girl who lures Danny into the gang in the first place) .

Not an original movie then by any means but in a year when a lot of Australian movies have fallen flat you could do a lot worse than have a look at the wannabes.

EXTRAS: Music videos cobbled together from songs in the movie, a making of featurette, storyboard comparisons, photo and poster gallery and the theatrical trailer.
