Aiming
for a quirky line somewhere
between The Craic and The
Castle, You Can’t Stop the
Murders is never less than
amusing but not as funny as it
thinks it is.
Written
by and starring stand up comics
Gary Eck, Akmal Salah and
Anthony Mir (who also directed),
the plot sees Eck and Salah as
two none too bright coppers in a
small NSW town, Gary dreams of
dating the local TV newsgirl
whilst Akmal spends his time
dreaming up bad film scripts
(“What about this one Gary, a
dead dog that come back to life
to help people in need”). When
a serial killer using the line
up of the camp pop group The
Village People as his “liet
motif” (victims include a
biker, a construction worker, a
sailor, a cowboy and an Indian)
begins to target the town The
Chief of Police calls in a big
city detective D.I. Tony Charles
(played by Anthony Mir in full
Don Johnson mode), Gary is
determined to catch the killer
before Charles but could he in
fact be the missing target on
the killer’s list.
With
some funny lines and situations
(especially the whole dog in the
boot sequence) and with guest
appearances from the likes of
Jimoin, The Umbilical Brothers
and Sandman and a Peter Allen
soundtrack, You Can’t Stop the
Murders does have it’s
moments.
