ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Tion Tin, Captain Haddock, Thompson and Thompson

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Classic animation based on the gorgeously drawn comics of Herge and featuring boy reporter Tin Tin and his faithful dog Snowy getting involved in adventures all over the world.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Oh what a joy this classy release from Madman is, 21 episodes spread over six discs and featuring some of Herge’s most well known stories. Released to tie in with the 75th anniversary of the character these episodes come from the early 90’s French series, retaining the period setting of the books adds enormously to the series charm, Tin Tin finds himself tangling with Nazis, spys, fifth columnists, jewel thieves and the like. Also appearing in many of the episodes are the inept detectives Thompson and Thompson, Captain Haddock and the slightly insane Professor Calculus. .

Pretty ageless, I couldn’t keep my 12 year old daughter away from the screen whilst it was on, in fact each episode is like a mini movie, the scripts are excellent, reminiscent of Warner Brothers movies of the forties, ones that generally starred Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre.

If you haven’t seen Tin Tin before then this is the perfect package and don’t just buy it with the kids in mind either. Herges sophisticated plotting and political concerns mean there are plenty of layers to uncover. Well worth a gander.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

A run down of Herge’s books, profiles of all the characters and best of all detailed overviews of all the stories.
