ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Brittany Snow, Tom Verica, Gail O’Grady, Will Estes, Sarah Ramos, Joey Lawrence, Virginia Masden

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In the early years of the 1960’s before the world discovered Psychedelia the Pryor family living in Philadelphia try to deal with their changing world, daughter Meg (Brittany Snow) works in the studios of American Bandstand whilst father Jack owns a TV and Radio shop. Mother Helen is busy seeking a spot of independence for herself.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Winning two emmys in your first year is no mean but nostalgia fest American Dreams managed it. Making heavy use of the TV show American Bandstand the show features at least two contemporary artists performing each week as a vintage star on the Bandstand set whether it Usher as Marvin Gaye, Michelle Branch as Lesley Gore or LeAnn Rimes as Connie Francis. Created by Jonathan Prince the show is as much about the changing face of America in the 1960’s as it is a drama about family life. This great 7 disc set from Universal contains all 25 episodes of season one, many of them extended with longer music performances, the team behind the show have worked at getting the period details right and it does add to the series charm and of course the fantastic soundtrack works more than well in its favour too.

Close in feel to The Wonder Years but with a more light hearted approach American Dreams is well worth checking out.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

A good package that includes 6 audio commentaries on selected episodes from Brittany Snow, Dick Clark and Jonathan Prince; Back to Bandstand features vintage material from the Bandstand vaults featuring the likes of The Beach Boys, Leslie Gore and Marvin Gaye; Timeline is a trip through the NBC vaults for news items and pop culture bits looking at the years 1963-64 finally there is a video of My Boyfriends Back performed by Stacie Orrico, Brittany Snow and Vanessa Lengies.
