ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Paul Giamatti, Hope Davis

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Based on the true story of comic book author Harvey Pekar American Splendour takes us deep inside the mind of the obsessive-compulsive Pekar (Giamatti) – a file clerk who finds an outlet and a role in the world thanks to his artistic talents.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

American Splendor is a breathtaking mix of fact and fantasy, the real Harvey Pekar makes regular appearances throughout the movie acting as a kind of benign commentator on his own life, we also get to see appearances by him on chat shows as well as glimpses of his comic books. Giamatti is excellent as the ordinary Pekar humdrum, often depressing working class background forms the basis of most of his work.

The directors Pulcini and Berman do a fantastic job in weaving all these various strands into a cohesive whole (at one point there is even a scene from the stage play based on the comic book based on the life…) and turn in a marvellous, poignant sometimes uplifting tale of one man’s life.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

The audio commentary features not just the cast and crew but also the real Harvey Pekar and some occasional interjections from his wife (played wonderfully by Hope Davis in the movie), there is also a featurette following Harvey Pekar as he visits the Cannes film festival, an interview with the directors taken from the SBS Movie Show, the theatrical trailer and various DVD Rom downloads.
