SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
American
Splendor is a breathtaking mix of fact and fantasy, the real Harvey
Pekar makes regular appearances throughout the movie acting as a kind of
benign commentator on his own life, we also get to see appearances by
him on chat shows as well as glimpses of his comic books. Giamatti is
excellent as the ordinary Pekar humdrum, often depressing working class
background forms the basis of most of his work.
The
directors Pulcini and Berman do a fantastic job in weaving all these
various strands into a cohesive whole (at one point there is even a
scene from the stage play based on the comic book based on the life…)
and turn in a marvellous, poignant sometimes uplifting tale of one
man’s life.
