ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Brenda Blethyn, Kevin Whately, Rosemary Harris, Anna Massey, Peter Sallis,

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Belonging is a thought-provoking ITV drama from the pen of Alan Plater about a turbulent period in the life of a woman with a heart of gold.   Plater, who has a worthy track record in British TV drama behind him (including Beiderbecke, Flambards and most recently Last of the Blonde Bombshells), adapted this story from the book The Web of Belonging by Stevie Davies.

It was first shown on UK TV on 12 September 2004 so this is a very quick release.

It stars Brenda Blethyn (as Jess) and Kevin Whately (as Jacob), both familiar TV faces, as a middle-aged married couple who care for three of Jacob's elderly and infirm relatives.  The "Oldies" (as they are called) are Rosemary Harris who plays Jacob's mother May, a stubborn and cantankerous old lady who sometimes seems to take a perverse delight in having her daughter-in-law fetch and carry for her.  She may nowadays be recognised for playing Peter Parker's Aunt May in the Spider-Man movies.  Character actress Anna Massey plays Brenda, May's sister and Jacob's aunt, who is the sensible one.  And Last of the Summer Wine actor and voice of Wallace, Peter Sallis, plays Jacob's elderly cousin Nathan.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

It is one of those "worthy" dramas that will undoubtedly be up for consideration for awards.  It is perhaps difficult to relate completely with Kevin Whatley's character because his dissatisfaction is not really explored prior to him abandoning a situation that he had undoubtedly lived with for many years up to then - although perhaps surprising the viewer with that was the point.  Brenda Blethyn is certainly the star turn and watching her act is always rewarding.  It is perhaps the sort of drama that might have benefited from being made in the 70s or 80s when it would have been made on flat videotape with the intensity that can bring.  The sheen of film (or maybe filmic effect?) somehow seems to blunt emotional things like this (for me anyway).

It is presented in wide-screen which to some will be a welcome bonus, but to others with regular TV's could be detrimental as they will see it much smaller on their screens in a letterbox format in contrast to the way it was originally broadcast.
