"There
was a knock at the door and I knew it was the wife's mother - because
the mice were throwing themselves at the trap".
ANYONE
IN IT WE KNOW?
Les
Dawson, Roy Barraclough
WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
A
collection of highlights from
the BBC output of one of
Britain’s best loved comics
the gurning, crumple faced Les
Dawson, with material ranging
from his sketch shows to
blankety blanks to Opportunity
Knocks.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Dawson
(who died in 1993) was so much more than just a comedian, he was also a
poet, a novelist and talented musician. This collection from Roadshow
pulls together some great material and a great deal of it very funny
material. Highlights would have to include his Cissie and Ada (pantomime
damish) housewife routines with Roy Barraclough, the pair of them often
struggling to contain their laughter, not to mention Dawson’s
fantastic only slightly out of key piano playing (it is actually very
difficult to pull this kind of thing off – keeping the tune there but
just out of balance). Dawson was of course well
known for his mother-in-law jokes and there are plenty of them on
display here (“I’ve just had some bad news, it’s the mother in
laws funeral – she’s cancelled it”).
A
nice handy little compendium, anyone interested in classic UK comedy should do
themselves a favour and add this release to their collection. Also on
release from Roadshow this month is The Best of Frankie Howerd.
