ANYONE
IN IT WE KNOW?
Molly
Parker, Peter Sarsgaad
WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Dot-com
whizzkid Richard Longman (Sarsgaad)
is enduring a lonely stay in Las
Vegas,
he persuades lap dancer Florence
(Parker) to spend the weekend
with him for $10,000 – Florence
lays down some ground rules, she
will only be his lap dancer
between 10pm
and 2am
and there can be no sex or
kissing. As the pair spend time
together the two of them learn
more than a little about life
and love.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
The
Center of the World is one very explicit drama (the thing with the
lollipop just has to be seen to be believed) but it is more than that,
it is also an exploration into loneliness, director Wang makes it plain
that Longman is a bit of a Nigel Nomates, sleeping under his desk and
interacting with a woman on a porn website.
Center
of the World has a real immediate look thanks in no small part to the
decision to shoot on digital video, graininess and in your face close
ups add to the appeal. There will be inevitable comparisons with movies
like Sex, Lies and Videotape, Pretty Woman and even Indecent Proposal
but Center does have a more natural feel than any of those.
Uncompromising,
very raunchy but very interesting for it’s comments on the way of the
depersonalising of human relationships in today’s computer obsessed
world.
