“It’s bad news Mr President”

“You mean they’re not bringing the muppet show back”

Dead Ringers is hilarious, one of the brightest BBC comedy shows of recent years , since the days of The Fast Show in fact; Based on a Radio 4 series of the same name the show takes a group of top notch impressionists and some high quality writers and turns in a very funny, entertaining fast moving sketch show.

Jon Culshaw, who has to be one of the best impressionists of his generation, heads up the cast with his Tony Blair, superlative Tom Baker, Russell Crowe and Dale Winton (“He’s lovely”). Others in the cast include such stalwarts as Jan Ravens, Phil Cornwell (who does a great Michael Caine as Greg Dyke), Kevin Connelly and Mark Perry.

Dead Ringers has a touch of class about it, poking fun at politics, tv, music and films, some of the targets may be a little too insularly British but on the whole it is spot on. Another good aspect is the quickfire nature of the sketches, if one doesn’t work don’t worry another will be along in double quick time.

Dead Ringers gives a slightly askew vision of our own world, here Parkinson doesn’t interview celebrities but people at bus stops and dustbinmen, Darth Vader becomes a tea lady and George Bush uses the songs of Sesame Street to help him remember his enemies.

Great fun. No extras as such but does include the original pilot show.
