ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Jamie Bell, Andy Sekis, Hugo Speer, Matthew Rhys

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

This film is set in the trenches of the bloodiest war of all time World War 1, The opening scenes recreate the horrors of war. The endless stream of machine bullets, the bombs and shells that kill and maim, the poison gas that rips the lungs out of men, thrust into this nightmare men are pushed to the brink of insanity.

The story concerns a squad of British Soldiers caught up in this conflict. In appalling conditions the squad are charging the enemy lines 9 soldiers become separated from the rest of the squad, these 9 come across a German foxhole with three German soldiers still there. Two of the Germans are killed instantly ( yes there is brutality here also) the third is held for questioning.

The thing that is apparent is that there are an abnormally large number of German soldiers (30 or more) bodies are lying in the mud of the trench with no apparent marks on them. Questions begin to form in the minds of the British soldiers: why didn’t the three remaining soldiers fall back? Why didn’t the German command reinforce the trench with fresh troops? And what happened to the dead German soldiers. Thus the first seeds of unease are sown in their minds also.

From the first evening spent in the trench British soldiers  begin to disappear and are killed under mysterious circumstances to say the least. This is all it takes to push some of the soldiers over the edge of sanity, filled with suspicion and doubt they turn on each other so it would seem that non may leave this cursed place. Which is their bigger demon the one inside or the one outside?

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

This co UK-German production which was filmed in Prague has a cast of people relatively unknown to me (with the exception of Jamie Bell/Billy Elliot and Hugo Speer/The Full Monty) , however all the cast  were believable it is an extremely well worked production, special mention to Hugh O’Connor and Andy Serkis who were outstanding in their respective roles.

If you want to witness soldiers in the midst of war trying to combat what they know and what they don’t understand, then jump into that trench and wait for the “Deathwatch”.

Highly recommended.
