Beautifully vibrant, intensely moving, Earth, made in 19989, is a film exploring a city about to go through major changes, seen through the eyes of a group of friends, all of whom are of differing backgrounds and religious castes.

It’s 1947 and Lahore is a thriving, hustling trendy city, but theres trouble brewing as Pakistan and India are on the verge of becoming independent leading to huge swathes of changes as Lahore is ceded to Pakistan .

Director Deepa Mehta (who is actually based in Canada) , who also made the sweeping and controversial Fire, which shared a similarly lush feel, is more than just a craftswoman, Earth is a powerful movie (and the partition of India a huge subject) which will stir the feelings of everyone who sees it.

The cast are all first rate but Mehta never lets them become the focus, the story taking centre stage at all times. Special mention must be given to the great soundtrack by A.R. Rahman. Wonderfully shot, Earth is a hugely watchable film.
