WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Fading
Hollywood director Val Waxman
(Woody Allen) is desperate to
make his comeback, only problem
is his ex-wife Ellie holds the
key - her new man is the studio
head who can greenlight Waxman's
movie. The neurotic Waxman
becomes so agitated by all this
that he develops psychosomatic
blindness!
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
It
seems like every year without fail Woody Allen adds another classic to
his CV, Hollywood Ending certainly fits that bill and like most of his
more recent movies Allen uses a high profile ensemble cast to tell his
story. Hollywood Ending is actually quite farcical in tone, especially
once Allen's Val finds himself stricken with psychosomatical blindness
but still being trusted with his directing abilities because of his past
glories despite the fact that his direction is verging on the absurd.
As
with every other Allen film autobiography plays a large part in the
proceedings although how much of Allen is Val I wouldn't like to say,
probably just the psychosomatic blindness bit. Tea Leoni again proves
what a talented actress she is with her role as Allen's ex-wife Ellie
and yet again Allen sets himself up for a lashing by partnering his 66
year old self with a much younger nubile girlfriend (Debra Messing), that's
by the by though as Hollywood Ending easily provides you with an
enjoyable evening's entertainment.
