WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
A
pair of young Afghani cousins
living in
Peshawar
on the Afghan border, working in
a brick factory and living in a
refugee camp the pair decide to
embark on a dangerous journey to
England
– placing themselves in the
hands of people smugglers.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
A
film of amazing power and one full of life affirming qualities,
Winterbottom (whose previous films include 24 Hour Party People and
Welcome to Sarajevo) gives us a real immediate movie, thanks in no small
part to his using non professional actors and a script that was partly
improvised. Using just an outline from scriptwriter Tony Grisoni
Winterbottom pretty much just jumped right in at the deep end, filming
began in November 2001 just a couple of months after September 11 and
the US’s war on Afghanistan, that Winterbottom turned in such a
lyrical and powerful form is surely testament to his powers as a
director. Incredibly timely In This World will not appeal to everyone
but everyone should definitely take time out to see it.
