ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

George O’Hanlon, Penny Singleton, Janet Waldo, Daws Butler , Mel Blanc, Don Messick

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Pitched as a futuristic counterpoint to The Flintstones, the Jetsons were your typical suburban middle class family, with the twist that they lived in the far future in Automated heaven. Father George worked for Spacely Space Sprockets pressing a button on and off whilst Jane was a house with gadgets that did everything for her, teenage daughter went to Orbit High School and mooned about after boys and younger son Elroy went to Little Dipper School.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Now over 40 years old The Jetsons (made by Hanna Barbera), is still very entertaining, this four disc set from Warner presents all 24 episodes from the 1962-63 season, initially shown in prime time on the ABC, The Jetsons, despite all their luxurious automatic devices, have all the concerns of the average 1960’s sitcom family, George was always ready to go apoplectic over his family’s latest exploits. Other regulars included George’s boss Cosmo G. Spacely (Mel Blanc) and the Jetson’s maid Rosie the Robot (voiced by Wilma Flinstone herself Jean Vanderpyl).

Seen now The Jetsons is very innocent and all the better for it. Well worth adding to your collection.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

A good package which kicks off with a shortish doco about the making of the show featuring vintage black and white footage of William Hanna and Joseph Barber and an interview with Janet Waldo; Nuclear family album offers fun profiles of the Jetson family including dog Astro; Space Age Gadgets looks at all the funky hi-tech stuff used by the family; Rosie the Robotic Maid profiles Rosie and includes some footage from The Flintstones; Family Favorites features trailers for other Warner product including Scooby Doo and Samurai Jack. All of the above can be found on disc four whilst disc one also features commentaries on the first two episodes by Janet Waldo.

INTERESTING FACT!

Daws Butler who provided the voice of young Elroy was also the voice of Yogi Bear.
