Of
course Hyacinth Bucket
(pronounced Bouquet) is the
ultimate snob, a suburban drama
queen and upperclass wannabe who
detests the fact that she has a
working class background and
working class relatives. Created
by Roy Clarke (of Open All Hours
and Last of the Summer Wine)
she’s also pretty hilarious.
Hyacinth spends most of her time
badgering her worn down husband
Richard (Clive Swift) and doing
battle with her sisters Daisy
and Rose (and her superslob
husband Onslow).
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
This
new release from Roadshow combines series 3 and 4 in a 2 disc set,
highlights include Richard attempting to get all artistic with a video
camera and Hyacinths attempts to buy a weekend cottage in the country.
Besides the 14 episodes the set also includes the 1991 Christmas
special. Creator Clarke has quite a singular style and is fantastic at
inventing prissy middle aged and elderly women. Hyacinth Bucket
definitely belongs in the British comedy characters hall of fame and
despite her prissiness and social climbing attempts she always manages
to scupper her own ambitions.
