WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Schoolteacher
Delasalle (Paul Merisse) is mean
and nasty to not just his wife
(Vera Clouzot) but also his
mistress, fellow teacher Nicole
(Simone Signoret). The pair come
together hatching a plot to bump
him off.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
The
classic French suspense noir that revolutionised the thriller genre and
clearly influenced Hitchcock's work on movies like Psycho and stacks of
others that don't even reach up to it's coat tails.
There
are so many moments of class, most of which you'll have seen copied in
countless other movies, from the plotting of the murder to the
women
struggling to
dispose of the body, the neighbour almost discovering them. Director
Georges Clouzet cranks up the suspense and keeps on building it right to
the shocking twist ending.
Full of
atmosphere helped enormously by the crisp black and white cinematography
Les Diaboliques is a treat to be savoured.
