WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Down
on his luck lawyer Harry Fabian
(Robert De Niro) determines to
get his revenge after losing a
case against crooked boxing
promoter Alan King, to help him
he ropes in the brother of King
(played by Jack Warden) and
married barmaid Helen Nasseros
(Jessica Lange).
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
A
remake of a 1950 classic film noir that starred Richard Widmark this is
one of Robert De Niro’s lesser known starring vehicles. Easily the
equal of the original with a clever script and a fantastic cast of
course. De Niro ensures that you can’t take your eyes off of him every
time he is on screen, but equally watchable is Jessica Lange as the
married woman drawn into an affair with Fabian (witness their intense
love scene in the street) as is the always fantastic Jack Warden. If you
are a fan of De Niro then you will certainly enjoy Night and the City
and if you can take or leave him then you will still find much to enjoy
in this, the final 20 minutes alone as Fabian gears up for his show down
makes it worth it alone.
