WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Anthology
series of often supernatural
stories from Twilight Zone
creator Rod Serling. Each
edition was made up ofusually three
(one of which would be quite
short) stories, the stories all
related to pictures in the art
gallery Serling would be in at
the start of each episode.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Night
Gallery was the follow up to The Twilight Zone by ultra talented Rod
Serling, this 3 disc set from Universal gathers together the original
series pilot the whole of series one plus some choice episode from the
rest of the series. Generally pretty spooky Night Gallery adapted
stories by many famous horror writers including H.P. Lovecraft, Fritz
Leiber, A.E. van Vogt, Algernon Blackwood, Conrad Aiken, Richard
Matheson, August Derleth, and Christian Brand and attracted some very
high profile people to appear in it including the likes of Joan
Crawford, Diane Keaton, Vincent Price, Roddy McDowell, Lindsay Wagner,
Burgess Meredith, Joanna Pettet and Raymond Massey to name just a few.
Steven
Speilberg also got his break into the business directing the segment
“Eyes” for the pilot show (Leonard Nimoy and John Astin also tried
their hand at directing episodes).
The
first series of Night Gallery appeared as a rotating part of the NBC
Umbrella Four In One (the others were McCloud, San FranciscoInternationalAirport and The
Psychiatrist); what’s great about the show is how varied the stories
are, from the deadly serious to the downright comic and most are pretty
entertaining too. If you have seen Night Gallery before then this is a
great refresher if you haven’t seen it before then prepare yourself
for a bumpy ride into classic 1970’s TV. Good stuff.
