WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
A
documentary from New Zealand TV
in which presenter Jim Hickey
travels the length of the
country exploring the locations
used in the Lord of the Rings
trilogy as well as talking to
people involved in the making of
the best movie trilogy ever.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
It
might be slight of budget but The Real Middle Earth makes for
fascinating viewing, not only do we get to see plenty of the gorgeous
New Zealand landscape (from Glenorchy in the South Island – the
setting for Isengard – to Matamta in the North Island to meet the
farmer whose land became Hobbiton) but we also get to meet some
interesting people, Ian Brodie, author of The Lord of the Rings Location
guidebook, has got a whole career for himself out of the movie, as has
the very talented calligrapher cand cartologist who came up with the
elvish scripts used in the movie.Theres
also room for chats with extras who became hobbits, hawks and Uruk-Hai.
On
its own merits The Real Middle Earth is pretty entertaining, to any fan
of the series or books it’s a definite must add to the collection.
