"I had a
‘who’ and a ‘how’ but I didn’t have a ‘why’. Maybe I
didn’t even have a ‘who’. I couldn’t say for certain how that
who did what he did how he did, and why he did what he did how he
did…."

WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Overweight
Private Eye Dick Trent (Paul
Chubb), whilst on a case,
accidentally videotapes a
murder, however when the body
disappears and the police
don’t want to know,
Trent
determines to get to the truth
of the matter.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Made
in 1994 The Roly Poly Man is one of the strangest Australian movies
you’ll ever see, mixing in elements of traditional film noir movies,
slapstick and gross out horror. Chubb
is great as the slobbish private eye to whom bizarre things keep
happening, very black, sometimes very shocking (there is a disgusting
brain pocketing scene that doesn’t bear thinking about but which
actually cause the dynamic of the movie to change as it looks like
aliens may just be involved in all of this). It’s generally pretty
funny though. Shot on a relatively low budget in and around
Sydney
by actor-director Bill Young The Roly Poly Man does tend to go for the
old sledge hammer school of plot advancement and you will definitely be
repulsed by some of the scenes but it is certainly a curio and there
can’t be too many Australian comedy-film noir-horror-thriller-scifi
movies out there. See it if you dare!!
