Akira Kurosawa

ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Tatsuya Nakadai, Reiko Dan

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Another teaming of Kurosawa and Mifune in a samurai saga similar to Yojimbo but with a greater injection of humor; Mifune plays samurai Sanjuro who during the mid 19th century finds himself training up a group of young would be warriors.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Definitely lighter of tone than many of their previous movies together Sanjuro is Mifune at his most playful, his world weary samurai all straggly of beard is a great counterpoint to the eagerness of the would be warriors; as always there are plenty of fine action sequences with strong swordfight scenes but also plenty of speeches to make about the nature of honour and justice, whilst director Kurosawa always has one eye ready for a great scene he lets Mifune take center stage at every opportunity.

Not in quite the same league as the Seven Samurai but an enjoyable romp nonetheless.
