ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

John Candy, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Fast paced Canadian sketch show set in a fake TV studio and starring Canada ’s top comedy talent including the likes of the awesome John Candy and Eugene Levy.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Taking the form of a faux TV network there are plenty of recurring characters in this laugh filled five disc set from Shout Factory including station president Guy Caballero (Joe Flaherty) and station manager Edith Prickley (Andrea Martin), of course this format also allowed for recurring sketches in the form of dodgy TV shows on the SCTV network including the likes of Polka variety show The Happy Wanderers hosted by Stan (Levy) and Yosh (Candy), the talk show Great White North hosted by beer drinking buddies Bob (Moranis) and Doug (Thomas), there is also the fantabulous soap Days of the Week which obviously pays out all those daytime soaps. Other highlights include Eugene Levy in the Jazz Singer and Russian drama Hey Giorgi!

Throw in regular musical interludes and you have one very very funny series and with each show lasting 90 minutes there is plenty of room for sketches to be properly paced. The 9 episodes on these five discs all come from the shows fourth season (its first on US Network TV) and is rightly regarded as being the shows zenith, its also great fun seeing major name players at the start of their careers. SCTV Volume 2 is well worth a look.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

The extras include a feature on the writers, another called SCTV at the Emmy’s, a look back called SCTV remembers, a look at the infamous Juul Haalmeyer Dancers and two photo galleries.
