WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
There
comes a day in every man's life
when he has to get off the
couch... and kill some zombies.
When flesh-eating zombies are on
the hunt for a bite to eat, it's
up to slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg)
and his best pal (Nick Frost) to
save their friends and family
from becoming the next entrée.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Simon
Pegg (who co-wrote the script) proved he had an eye for comedy when he
came up with the excellent Channel 4 slacker sitcom Spaced and this
gruesome comedy homage to the movies of George A. Romero is full of
belly laughs and classic moments.
Very
much a continuation of the style found in Spaced, Pegg's Shaun is a
slacker supreme who is so caught up in his own problems (girlfriend is
issuing ultimatums, mother is being a pain) that he doesn't even realise
at first that zombies are amongst us and even when he does he still
finds it hard to get himself motivated.
There
are some great set pieces, especially the opening sequence in which the
town wakes up to its daily routine is very smart and the saving of the
records scene and the final showdown at the town local - The Winchester.
Shaun of the Dead is still a horror movie so there is a certain amount
of gore but its tempered by enough humour to not exactly make it
palatable but to still keep you watching. More proof that when it comes
to comedy the Brits have it down pat. Good stuff.
