ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, Judith Anderson, Vincent Price, Cedric Hardwicke,

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Some guy called Moses gets the word from God to lead his people to The Promised Land; Cue the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea and the laying down of God’s laws in the form of the Ten Commandments.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

With its widescreen vistas and stirring soundtrack The Ten Commandments is a full on biblical epic with Heston in Magisterial mode. Made in 1956 and running almost four hours the movie surprisingly garnered only 2 academy award nominations, one for best picture and one for the cinematography of Loyal Griggs.

A bit long winded and sometimes seeming little more than the Bible in pictures The Ten Commandments is still a classic piece of Hollywood . De Mille had made a version in 1923 in the silent era and obviously had an affinity for the material.

Now almost 50 years old the Ten Commandments is here presented in its full edition (over two discs), complete with the rarely seen onscreen introduction by CB himself. Yul Brynner pretty much steals the show as Pharoah Rameses but Heston does turn in one of his best performances here; Also worthy of mention is Edward G. Robinson as Dathan and Yvonne De Carlo as Septora.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

Quite a lot actually,  6 short features which when played together give you a full blown documentary on the making of the movie with contributions from most of the surviving cast members as well as CB De Milles grand-daughter; Newsreel footage of the movies premiere in New York; 3 trailers (one from 1956 for its original release, one from 1966 and one from 1989, disc one also features a commentary from author Katherine Orrison).

INTERESTING FACT

Heston’s newborn son Fraser played the part of the infant Moses!
