ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, David Wenham, Richard Roxburgh

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In late 1800's Europe the very dashing Van Helsing works for the Catholic Church fighting evil and wrong doing and trying to defeat such famed figures as Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and assorted werewolves.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Fantastic set design and Kate Beckinsale in a corset lift Van Helsing up out of what could have been the biggest disaster since LXG. Jackman is fantastic as Van Helsing (surely prime candidate for new James Bond) doing battle against evil (and dodgy accented Richard Roxburgh). Despite the often banal dialogue you do end up getting swept along with the pace of the movie, the generally effective special effects and CGI treatments.

The relationship between Van Helsing and Kate Beckinsale's Anna Valerious is never fully explored - Van Helsing teams up with her in Romania where she is trying

to find her brother who has become a werewolf. If you're in the mood for an extravagant action flick with period trimmings then you could do worse than check out Van Helsing.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

A solid set of extras back up the main feature starting with a pair of audio commentaries first from director Sommers (who also brought us the Mummy franchise) and producer Bob Dusay, next is one featuring the actors Richard Roxburgh (Dracula), Will Kemp (Wolfman) and Shuler Hensley (Frankenstein's Monster), this second is the better of the two commentaries; Next is EXPLORE DRACULA'S CASTLE a fun interactive feature that allows you to actually go inside the rooms of Dracula's lair via your remote control; BRINGING THE MONSTERS TO LIFE is a 10 minute feature looking at the CGI effects; YOU ARE IN THE MOVIE is a multi-angle presentation from various scenes in the movie where you get to choose the camera point of view; VAN HELSING - THE STORY, THE LIFE, THE LEGEND is another 10 minute featurette looking at the history of the Van Helsing character in literature and movies. There are also a bloopers reel, a text version of the film credits, trailers and a playable demo (if you have the machine) of the Van Helsing X-Box game.
