WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Inspired
by the life of Jackie Kallen,
Against The Ropes stars Meg Ryan
as one of boxings few female
managers. growing up the
daughter of a trainer Kallen is
never far from the ring, now in
her mid 30's she is determined
to make a name for herself in
the world of boxing, spotting
untapped potential in drug
dealer Luther Shaw (Omar Epps)
she grooms him for stardom in
the ring, helped along the way
by veteran trainer Felix
Reynolds (Charles S. Dutton).
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
A
real old fashioned (in the best sense) type of movie, Against The Ropes,
with its script by Cheryl Edwards, has something of the feel of a 1940's
John Garfield flick, boxing never translates too well onto the big
screen but cleverly here the central dynamic of the movie is the
relationship between Ryan's Kallen and Epp's inner city Luther and its
the strong performances of Ryan and Epps
that
help elevate Against The Ropes into more than just another sports movie.
Against The Ropes then is an entertaining look at a male dominated
highly chauvanistic world which one woman managed to shake up a little.
