ANYONE
IN IT WE KNOW?
Will
Farrell, Christina Applegate, Paull Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner
WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
In
the mid 1970’s Ron Burgundy
(Farrell) is San Diego’s top
news anchor, but he and his
three co-workers sports reporter
Champ Kind (David Koechner),
investigative reporter Brian
Fantana (Paul Rudd) and
weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve
Carell) find their male
chauvinistic world shaken up by
the arrival of --- a woman,
determined reporter Veronica
Corningstone (Applegate) is
determined to become San
Diego’s first anchorwoman.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Funnier
than a convention full of stand up comics, Anchorman is a real laugh
fest, set in the mid 1970’s, it’s a glorious evocation of dodgy
70’s fashions, polyester suits ago-go in fact, weird facial and body
hair and harmony singing. The
inherent chauvinism of the seventies sees Burgundy dealing with the
battles of the sexes in truly vintage fashion whilst the biggest
strength of the movie is not just the hilarious script but the tight
playing from the cast, Burgundy’s fellow newscasters are fantastic,
sports reporter Champ Kind (David Koechner), investigative reporter
Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell)
are absolutely spot on in there stupidness, Christina Applegate as
Veronica Corningstone mostly plays it straight but sparks well off of
Farrell.
There
are so many highlights but two of the best see Burgundy and his team
breaking into 4 part harmony (singing Afternoon Delight no less) as Ron
tries to explain about being in love and the Mexican stand off brawl
between the news teams from rival stations, superb!
There
are cameos aplenty from Farrell’s rat pack mates including the likes
of Tim Robbins, Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Vince Vaughn,
it's probably the fact that they are all in their thirties now but
Stiller and Co seemed to have an obsession with the seventies at the
moment, the nostalgia of harking back to their formative years no doubt
playing a part.
Will
Farrell is very, very talented and Anchorman is one of the funniest
movies you’ll see all year.
