ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

David Boreanaz, James Masters,

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Series five goes back to its roots with its underlying story and with plenty of episodes being stand-alone stories.  There are some absolutely brilliant moments within this series-my favourite being the Funny Little Puppet Man episode.  David Boreanaz as a brooding vampire puppet was hysterically funny. The introduction of Spike (James Masters) into the firm Wolfram & Hart led to a wonderful conflict between Angel and Spike - Angel is no longer the only vampire with a soul, and he is also not the only one who has loved Buffy.  This development led to some of the funniest moments of the series as the writers played them off against each other in lots of silly and petty arguments.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Lots of questions were answered and story lines resolved, including the Cordelia issue- I was pleased that they didn't leave her languishing in her coma any longer. Some of the issues were closed off in a manner that didn't do all the preparation justice, which is probably attributable to the series not being picked up for another year.  You could tell they were hurrying to get everything in before the final episode.  I was most disappointed with the way the Angel-Buffy-Spike triangle was resolved and felt that it didn't do credit to the effort that was put into creating said relationships.

Two of the series favourites being killed off in heart rending scenes that didn't leave a dry eye in my house led up to a battle royal between the forces of god and evil as the series finale. The gang are prepared to battle all manner of demon and it ends there, just like a cliffhanger final episode should.  Apparently the ending is the one that Joss Whedon had decided upon before hearing that his show had been cancelled.  I would have liked seeing the battle itself, given the computer technology available it would have been fun to see the mythical creatures and other demons that they could create.

Given the quality of the majority of the Series 5 it was a complete shame that they didn't have the chance to finish everything off the way that Joss Whedon intended. Between the Angel and Buffy series they have amassed 11 series , quite a feat when you consider that the original Buffy movie was so completely woeful.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

There are the usual commentaries by cast, writers and producers, which are a bit dry. The featurettes were interesting with some of them being quite funny.  I was disappointed with the outtakes, as I would have liked to see more of them.  Overall the special features were a bit of a let down as I expected to see more considering it is the end of the series.
