Kevin Conroy, David Warner, Helen Slater, Adrienne Barbeau

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Volume two of The Dark Knight of Gotham , Batman, features 28 episodes of strong drama that for sure is aimed at the adult audience, presenting a whole new dark undercurrent to the world of Batman and the environs of Gotham City

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Made between 1992-95 Batman the Animated Series was one of the most intelligent animation series yet seen on US TV, this Batman is a dark troubled hero who is determined to rid the streets of Gotham of the evil that lurks there.  One of the key episodes on this set makes the style of the series plain, “Robin’s Reckoning” tackles the murder of Dick Graysons parents and the consequences of that traumatic event, other stand outs include Off Balance and If You’re So Smart Why Aren’t You Rich, the level of care lavished on the series is obvious from the quality

scripts, the fine level of voice talent on display (David Warner, Helen Slater and Adrienne Barbeau are all involved as guest stars) and the great realisation of a mostly night bound Gotham.

Pretty much every episode of this series has the stamp of quality with moments of action counterbalanced by humour, if you have yet to become acquainted with this version of Batman then this set could be the ideal primer.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

Some great extras include commentary on four key episodes by the series creators, a doco called Robin Rising which examines how the character of The Boy Wonder has evolved over the years; Gotham’s Guardians looks at the supporting characters in Gotham and Voices of the Knight sees some of the voice artists talking about their work.

TRIVIA

The character of Harley Quinn was created for the animated series and subsequently made his way into the comic book version.
