ANYONE
IN IT WE KNOW?
Shannen
Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, T.W. King
WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
When
Phoebe (Milano) returns to her
San Francisco home to move into
the family home with her sisters
(after losing her job) she
discovers a book (The Book of
Shadows) in the attic which
reveals the destiny of the
girls, they are in fact witches!
Reciting a spell from the book
unlocks their powers, each
discover they have a unique
power (Prue can move objects
with her mind) Piper has the
ability to stop time and Phoebe
can see into the future. Now
that their powers have been
unleashed they discover all
manner of evil out to do them
down but the girls are
determined to use their powers
for good.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
It
seemed when Charmed first arrived it was riding on the Buffy wave but it
was quickly apparent that the show had a much nicer centre than the
Vampire saga, also the fact that there were three leads allows for a
wider range of stories, the sisters are all different and react in
different ways to their new found powers.
Besides
fighting evil in the form of warlocks, demons, grimlocks and the like
the girls also had to continue their lives in the real world with Pru
working for an
auction
house, Piper a student chef at a restaurant called The Quake and Phoebe
never really settling in one job. Key aspects of this first season
include the girls discovering that handyman Leo is actually a White
Lighter (a guardian angel for good witches) and their protector, Pru
telling her former boyfriend Andy, a cop, about their powers, this leads
to a tragic end for the character by the end of the season.
Whilst
the series never belies its glossy Aaron Spelling origins and there is a
little bit of a Monster of the Week tendency but Charmed is a nicely
entertaining series with a good looking cast that in this first series
laid the ground work for more to come. Worth a look despite the lack of
extras.
