Falk, Robert Culp, Valerie Harper, Dean Stockwell, Leonard Nimoy, Martin

WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
"Oh,
there's just one more
thing...", the man with the
mac is back. Police Lieutenant
Columbo returns for a further 8
mysteries. Originally airing
between 1972-73 as part of the
NBC Mystery Movies series this
second run of 8 feature length
stories has the rumpled tec
solving such mysteries as a
philandering symphony conductor
(John Cassavetes) and murderous
twins (both played by Martin
Landau) out to kill their Uncle
as well as the strange tale of a
disagreement in a football team
that leads to murder.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Season
two of Columbo ups the ante somewhat, bigger name guest stars, tighter
plots and of course Peter Falk very comfortable in his role as the
terrier tec. Each episode of Columbo starts in exactly the same way, we,
the viewer see the events that lead up to a murder being committed, we
even see who the murderer is (most unusual for a crime drama series you
might think and you'd be right) and the murderer is always convinced
that their alibi is perfect, of course the dogged Columbo always has his
suspicions from the start too and never lets up, getting a complete view
of the villain (always played by a prominent name) slipping in
seemingly
unrelated questions with the end result that by shows end Columbo has
the killer hook, line and sinker!!
Columbo
unusually also for a detective always worked alone, apart from his
trusty basset hound of course, whose name we never get to know. Let's
face it Peter Falk is Columbo, it would be impossible to imagine anyone
else in the role, even though it almost went to Bing Crosby (who luckily
turned it down), and Falk makes Columbo a very entertaining way to spend
90 minutes (or sometimes two hours), added to that is the playing of the
guest stars (who seemed to always enjoy their chance to be killers or
victims) besides those already mentioned this set also features Bradford
Dillman, Dean Jagger, Honor Blackman, Wilfred Hyde-White, Mel Ferrer,
Laurence Harvey, Dabney Coleman and Julie Newmar. The legendary Steven
Bochco also contributed two scripts to this season. Columbo Season Two
(even without any extras) is a must have for your classic TV collection,
pure and simple.
