ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

With the voices of Alan Reed, Jean Vander Pyl, Mel Blanc and Bean Benaderet.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

More stone age frivolity with season three of one of TV’s greatest ever animations, The Flintstones, designed for a family audience and loosely based on The Hooneymooners, The Flintstones deals with suburban life and all it entails, Fred Flinstone (voiced by Alan Reed) worked at Rock Head and Quarry Cave Construction Co (where he operated a dinosaur crane) whilst wife Wilma (Jean Vanderpyl) was the perfect housewife, their next door neighbours were Fred’s best friend Barney Rubble(the legendary Mel Blanc) and his wife Betty (Bea Benaderet)

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Parodying the absurdities of modern day living certainly struck a chord with the audience and by its third season The Flintstones was fast becoming one of the most popular shows on TV, in fact the Flintstones was to the sixties viewing audience what the Simpsons is to today’s – a clever show for adults that uses animation to poke fun at pop culture so this third series takes in the Twist dance craze, TV take offs (Hawaiian Escape is heavily based on the popular series Hawaiian Eye) and movie send ups (Dial S For Suspicion is a gloriously funny take on Hitchcock’s Dial M For Murder) but mostly though the series concerns itself with everyday suburban life, albeit with a stone age edge, for example Fred has a great “you beaut” car but peddles it with his feet, the gramophone is powered by a bird’s beak and the family pet

is a dinosaur. There is some spreading out of the situation with this third season with the Flintstones getting themselves a baby daughter called Pebbles in the episode Dress Rehearsal.
Very entertaining most episodes revolve around Fred either jumping to conclusions about something (thinking Wilma is pregnant in The Little Stranger) or starting out with good intentions that go pear shaped (trying to hire singer Rock Roll for Wilma’s birthday in The Twitch).  The show might be 40 years old but it still raises more than a few laughs and from any comedy show you can’t ask for more than that.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

Extras feature a guide to collecting all things Flintstone in Bedrock Collectibles and a look at The Flintstone Wives in First Families of the Stone Age.
