IN IT WE KNOW?
Diarmuid
Gavin, Jane Owen
WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Celebrating
two hundred years of the Royal
Horticultural society this new 2
disc set from Acorn creates
seven different gardens each
representing a different period
from the last 200 years,
Diarmuid Gavin creates the
gardens whilst Jane Owen tours
the country examining the
history of the gardens.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Diarmuid
Gavin is the rock star of the gardening scene as this entertaining
series makes plain and it is interesting seeing the gardens coming
together as Gavin gets to grips with the changing face of gardening as
each successive generation attempts to introduce new trends and put
their own mark on things. As interesting as it is seeing the gardens
come together equally of interest is the history of gardening over the
last 200 years, from the expansiveness of the Capability Brown years succeeded
by the innovative Humphrey Repton and the
quest
by Joseph Banks to introduce as many new species of plant into Britain
as possible, Banks who travelled to Australia on Captain Cook's Endeavor
pretty much ended up naming much of the flora and fauna to be found down
under in the process, he then went on to set up a whole series of
intrepid plant hunters to travel the world bringing back plants for Kew
Garden. It's stories like these that make Gardens Through Time more than
just a "gardening" title and make for an enjoyable release.
