ANYONE
IN IT WE KNOW?
Graham
Kennedy, Bert Newton, Don Lane, Ray Martin
WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Ray
Martin takes a nostalgic look
back at the career of bona fide
legend Graham Kennedy from his
In Melbourne Tonight days and
his sparking off Bert Newton
through to his quiz show days (Blankety
Blanks) and beyond...
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
There are few legends
of Australian TV, Don Lane, Bert Newton, Rowena Wallace, but at the head
of them all stands the genius that is Graham Kennedy, coming to
prominence at the dawn of TV in Australia, thanks to his late night talk
show In Melbourne Tonight, Kennedy ruled the TV roost for 30 years until
deciding in the late 1980's to walk away from it all.
This
superb 3 hour plus release plunders the 9 archives to trace his entire
career from the IMT days of the fifties, through his infamous early
seventies shows where he
completely
disregarded the rules of live television, culminating in his crow call
cry of "faaarrrkk" which led to his live TV days being
numbered, not that Kennedy seemed to care of course going on to spend
the 80's as the quiz show host du jour with the legendary Blankety
Blanks (there is some great footage of the show featured here) as well
as speaking his mind, as only he can, on Coast to Coast. What made
Kennedy special was his super sharp humour and impish sense of fun and
that is here in spades - in practically every single frame.
As
an entertaining slice of nostalgia The King of Television is hugely
enjoyable, as a valuable archive of classic TV material it's indispensable.
Don't miss it!
ANY
SPECIAL FEATURES?
The
excellent idea for the extras is to include a complete edition of In
Melbourne Tonight from the 1950's - the first to come from the brand new
studio 9. It's surprisingly high quality stuff too.
