WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
When
Hetty Wainthropp hits 60 she
realises that she isn’t
fulfilled or making the most of
her life, realising that she is
good at reading people she
decides to become a private
detective much to the surprise
of her husband Robert. With only a raincoat and
a handbag and the help of a down
on his luck teenager, Geoffrey
played by future hobbit Dominic
Monaghan, she is soon solving
cases involving witchcraft and
murder and hunting down missing
persons.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Hetty
Wainthropp Investigates could well turn out to be the best series the
always great value Patricia Routledge made, based on a novel by David
Cook the character of Hetty is like a dour cousin of her most famous
character Hyacinth Bucket without the fussiness.
This
is an enjoyable series, Hetty doesn’t drive so has to rely on either
public transport or her young sidekick (who is actually causing trouble
in the first episode) and his scooter to get around, story wise it’s
not all murder and mayhem either, in fact the Wainthropp Detective
Agency
becomes something of a missing persons specialist with three of the six
stories on this two disc set involving people going astray).
This
two disc set from Acorn contains all six episodes from the first season
of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and is nicely watchable. Seek it out.
