ANYONE
IN IT WE KNOW?
Ted Neeling, Yvonne Elliman
WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
This free-wheeling adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber
and Tim Rice’s wildly
successful stage extravaganza
takes us to Israel
as a group of young tourists
become caught up in the story of
Jesus and his disciples.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
It’s
always hard for movie makers to come up with successful film versions of
successful stage pieces and Norman Jewison’s flick is no exception, it
has its moments but suffers from having to open up from the confines of
the stage production, it’s got a great pedigree though, besides the
aforementioned Webber and Rice genesis, the screenplay was co-written by
Jewison and the legendary Melvyn “South Bank Show” Bragg as well as
musical direction courtesy of Andre Previn.
The cast is pretty much full of unknowns but does
feature Ted Neeley as Jesus and Yvonne Elliman (who at one stage was a
back up singer for Eric Clapton as well as scoring a couple of solo
hits). Definitely an interesting curio.
