WHAT’S
IT ABOUT THEN?
Elderly widower Kotch is living with his son and his
family and knows he is
outstaying his welcome,
especially with his habit of
speaking his mind (even going so
far as to get baby sitter Erica
the sack), when he learns that
his son would like to see him in
a retirement home Kotch hits the
road, teaming up with the
pregnant Erica the pair end up
in Palm Springs and learn more
than a little about life.
SO
IS IT ANY GOOD?
Wonderfully
study of growing old disgracefully directed by legendary actor Jack
Lemmond (his only directing credit) and starring an ageing up Walter
Matthew as the 72 year old looking to find a trace of meaning in his
life, the movie really finds its feet when Kotch makes the break from
his family and ends up moving to Palm Springs with their former and now
pregnant housekeeper.
Kotch
is a funny movie (with a gentle heart) with performances to match,
Walter Matthau is always great value but is here well supported by
Deborah Winters as young Erica.
Made in the early seventies (1971) Kotch has a really
nice feel, well filmed with lots of autumnal tones to the fore, if
you've never had the chance to see this movie then this new release from
MRA provides the perfect opportunity to do so.
