ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, Roger E.  Mosley, Larry Manetti / Orson Welles as the voice of Robin Masters

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

All 22 episodes of season two of classy detective series Magnum P.I. Ex Vietnam Veteran Thomas Magnum tackled his cases as a private investigator in idyllic Hawaii whilst also being responsible for looking after the luxury estate of the never seen Robin Masters. Magnum worked in conjunction with Master's fastidious British butler Higgins and the pair had a bit of a hate-hate relationship.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Tom Selleck and his award winning moustache are back for a second helping of cool Hawaiian fun and danger. This second season seems to pick up a gear as the writers and producers (the legendary Donald P. Bellisario and Glenn Larson) sought to give us more focus on Magnum himself, traces of his backstory emerging revealing he is a Navy Seal and that he used to be married in South East Asia whom Magnum believes dead, it’s this kind of detail that elevates Magnum above the norm and prevents it becoming just another Tec show.

Delightfully unformulaic in fact and full of quirky humour Magnum is one of the best shows to come out of the 80’s and whilst Magnum is essentially a detective show the producers gave the audience enough intelligence and deviated from the line more than once with non crime episodes, at the heart of the series too is the humour factor, especially in the relationship between Magnum and Higgins (in fact this season started something of a trend as John Hillerman gets his first double role playing his half brother Elmo Ziller!)

Above all though Tom Selleck is just superb as Thomas Magnum, a career defining role that he has found hard to shake off, charming and witty and with a Roger Moore-esque eyebrow raising technique guaranteed to have the ladies swooning.  It’s great that Universal are giving us an opportunity to catch up with all our favourite 80’s icons and Magnum is the pick of the bunch. Don’t miss it.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

No extras as such but Universal have thrown in an episode of Knight Rider (Brother’s Keeper) and The A-Team (Diamond’s N Dust) as lead ins to their season two releases.
