WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Ex US intelligence agent McGill works as a private detective and sometime bounty hunter in Britain and sometimes Europe. McGill has no ties, carries a gun and lives out of a suitcase, McGill is expensive too $500 a day but his real motivation is tracking down the people who framed him into losing his job at the CIA (he was framed over a scientist defecting to the USSR).

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Umbrella have now achieved legendary status in our eyes, not content with the superlative releases of The Saint and Department S they've now gone one better and brought us the best ITC series of them all - Man In A Suitcase. Starting with its awesome Ron Grainer theme tune Man is pure cool all the way, Gray haired Richard Bradford stars as the laconic McGill (whose first name was John but he seldom used it) and brings with him a high degree of inscrutability, you can see McGill is a thinker - but a fighter too!

Made at the height of the swinging sixties (1966-67) Man In A Suitcase taps into the then popular cold war spy drama vein of John La Carre and Len Deighton but imbues it with enough Avengers style touches and ITC trademarks to easily claim it's own style. It's actually probably the least dated of all ITC series whether that is down to a lessening of some of the more comedic aspects that would creep into ITC's action adventure output or down to the playing of Bradford I'm not sure but lets face McGill was cool then and he's still cool now. Add in appearances from some great names (including the likes of Felicity Kendal, Colin Blakely, Anton Rodgers, Mike Pratt, Stuart Damon, Peter Vaughan, Derren Nesbitt, Sally Geeson, and even Donald Sutherland) and you have a piece of five star classic TV.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

As with other ITC sets the extras here are superb including a reprint of the original ITC publicity booklet which was sent out to the media and TV stations when the show first aired, there are audio commentaries featuring star Richard Bradford, writer Philip Broadley and director Peter Duffell, there are also introductions from guest players Jane Merrow and George Sewell; The shows wisely retain the original commercial ad break bumpers so beloved of collectors as well as a text based reprint of the original ITC press book; There's a trailer for the old ITC videos release, extensive production/liner notes, cast and crew profiles, large photo galleries and a look at the memorabilia thrown up by the series.
