WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

The Notebook takes the Fried Green Tomatoes route of a period drama wrapped in contemporary trimmings as the ageing Duke (Garner) reads a story to an old woman in a nursing home, the story follows a pair of young lovers, Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) who in true Romeo and Juliet fashion are together despite the disapproval of her parents, things reach crisis point when her parents send Allie away and world war II intervenes…

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Classic romantic drama that shows that love really can conquer all; Based on the book by Nicholas (Message in a Bottle) Sparks, The Notebook is at times sentimental but superbly enjoyable, Rachel McAdams in particular is a real find, cute as a button and definitely one to watch out for., in fact the playing between McAdams and Gosling is very strong but their thunder is all but stolen by the gorgeous playing of Rowlands and Garner, Rowlands is wonderful in her innocence as the Alzheimer’s hit elderly Allie and James Garner is, well, he’s James Garner isn’t he, pure legend.

You know where the movie is headed right from the get go but it’s a beautiful story extremely well told and the excellent nostalgic look and feel of the movie means that it really entertains; Whilst some will classify it as a chick flick the Notebook is a movie to be enjoyed by anybody with a bit of romance in their soul, whatever their age. Just bring your hankies!!
