ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Peter Gilmore, Anne Stallybrass, Edward Chapman, Brian Rawlinson , Howard Lang, Jessica Benton, Philip Bond, James Hayter

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

In the 1860’s Liverpool Sea Captain James Onedin (Peter Gilmore) sets his sights on his own shipping line, starting out with a single ship (bought with a 25 pound inheritance) he spies an opportunity to get his hands on the top of the range schooner the Charlotte Rhodes but to do so he must marry the owner’s daughter Anne who although no great beauty is more than a match for James and so the scene is set for one of the most popular shows of the 1970’s.

SO IS IT ANY GOOD?

Starting with one of the best remembered theme tunes ever (Aram Khachaturyan’s Spartacus) and stirring scenes of the Charlotte Rhodes in full flight The Onedin Line immediately set out its stall as Classic Sunday Night Drama; What began life as a one off play for a BBC try out series in 1970 called Drama Playhouse quickly became a top draw for viewers, running right through the seventies and lasting some 91 episodes.

This first season, presented in a nicely packaged 4 disc digipack set from Roadshow, featured 15 episodes and the first few episodes of this series are mainly concerned with setting up the premise of the show and introducing the key characters who besides Onedin and wife Anne include the ever dependable

Captain Baines (Howard Lang) who was Onedin’s right hand man, Onedin’s miserly shopkeeper brother Robert (Brian Rawlinson) who becomes an unwilling partner in James’s ship owning business as well as rascally old Mr Callon (legendary character actor Edward Chapman) who was Onedin’s chief rival, meanwhile Jessica Benton played Onedin’s pretty sister who had eyes on a shipping line of her own.

The BBC have always had a fascination for dramas of a nautical nature (think Triangle, Howard’s Way etc) but the Onedin Line is easily the pick of them and whilst later series of the show became slightly bogged down in cast changes and too much soap style goings on this first series is a true slice of classic TV drama and is simple a must buy despite the lack of extras.

Incidentally in the Drama Playhouse episode (which apparently is no longer in existence) Sheila Allen played the role of Anne but turned down the role for the series.

ANY SPECIAL FEATURES?

No extras.

TRIVIA

The ship that played the Charlotte Rhodes in the series was called the Soren Larson and is still used today in the Pacific and around New Zealand as a passenger ship!
